Why a dog park
Suffolk County Unleashed is an organization comprised of dog lovers and dog enthusiasts dedicated to the establishment of off leash dog parks within Suffolk County.
A dog park:
---Promotes responsible pet ownership
---Is a tool for realistic enforcement of dog control laws
--Stimulates interaction with people, encourages people to exercise
---Provides the community with an attractive pet friendly environment for anyone considering moving into the area
---Unites community
---Would increase park utilization, as most dog owners consider spending time with their dog the ultimate leisure activity
---Serves as a place for community events such as "animal adoption day," dog training seminars, dog shows, dog obedience programs, and various social functions
We need a dog park because:
- Brookhaven Town is the number one township in the state of New York with the most dog licenses
- Four in ten of its households own one or more dogs
- With many of our apartments and condominiums dog friendly, these people lack the facilities to exercise their dogs
- There are no public areas within the Town of Brookhaven where a dog may run legally off leash. Joggers, baseball players and the like are currently being served by our parks- dog owners are not
- Suffolk County owns over 50,000 acres of parkland, with just one and three quarter acres dedicated to its 600,000 dog owners for its one and only dog park located in Huntington.
